My Grand US Invasion 09

Hello, and welcome to Joders’ Grand US Invasion page.

From here on in, I’ll be putting most of the plans for my vacation here (or at least linking any posts to this page).

If you’ve got questions or suggestions, put em all here in this one, easy to find spot!

  1. Awesome idea, Joders.

One question, are you heading to Daners on the 22 or the 21st? I’m dreaming up a tentitive itinerary for you and Wanders.

  2. I have one, too. Would you like to hit the underground tour of Seattle?

  3. Anners, I’m aiming for a morning flight to Daners’ on 22nd Nov (I believe this is the Sunday) which means 2 full days with you in LA (and one day rocking around by myself before you get there).

Oooooh, Me, I vaguely recall reading something about the underground tour, it has historical significance right?? It sounds great! Sign me up!

  4. Okay, coolness. How long will you be staying here in the drudges of Seattle? I have tons of great places to show you. Can we do tacky things? cause I’m all about tackiness. And camp. Anything with camp.

How much is a flight to LA? From SeaTac, I mean. Can anyone help me? I might be able to sweet talk some days. Where are you guyses staying? I’m a poor little cop who works for the federal government, remember. Plus, I miss Wanda and I totally want to see LA again.

  5. Guys, I’m totoally excited. This takes my mind off the fact I have to work 16 hours of forced OT on my birfday.

  6. Cool beans.

Daners, I’m going to try to take care of the hotel (reservations and monies), so you guys won’t have to worry about that at all.

It’ll be soooo fun if you can come!!!

I’m trying to have a itinerary and stuff together by tomorrow night on Hark!

  7. Me I’m planning on being in Seattle on Sunday (I’m aiming to get in mid morning), Monday and Tuesday.

It’s looking likely that I’ll be leaving on Wednesday morning in order to get to Wanda’s for Thanksgiving. My travel agent is looking at flights for me and she’s also looking into a rail trip incase it’s cheaper and takes less time.

I dunno, how long do you suppose a trip on a train from one side of the country to other would take? OK, scratch that, the journey takes 65 hours. No way, no how am I gonna be on a train for 65 hours!

I’m still working on my flight from LA to Seattle. I’m not sure how much it’ll cost. Anners mentioned that sometimes airlines do flights between the 2 cities for $49. I’m assuming that’s only one way and the return trip would probably not be the same price (that’s the way our cheap flights work here in Oz).

I would love it if you could join us in LA. That would be fantastic!!

OMG, an ininerary already Anners? I’m soooooo excited! But no pressure. Take as long as you need. I won’t be there for five and a bit months.

  8. Joders, if I don’t start to plan this now while I have some free time, I ain’t ever gonna get it done!

    :)

    * Me, u better come! And when’s your birfday?!

  9. Okey dokey Ms K, I understand completely :)

    Yeah Me, you’d better come!

Gawd, I’ve just been overcome by a wave of excitement!!

  10. Okay, give me the days you are all going to be in LA. I promise I’ll do my damnest to get there.

Anners, it’s next Tues. On the 16th. And I might have to work OT :(

  11. I’ll be there from Thursday 19 November, but all three of us (ie Anners, Wanda and I) will be there on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 November.

Then I’m heading to your place on the Sunday morning (hopefully – still haven’t got the flight organised).

OT on your birffday? That sux and blows at the same time :(

  12. I probably asked this before (in fact, I’m certain I have) and I am nothing if not retarded, but is there any place you particularly want to see while in Seattle? I figure we’ll stop a few places after you arrive in Seattle and maybe catch lunch there or something.

  13. Also, any particular restaurant you would like to try? Anthony’s is delicious, if expensive, and there is a Red Robin on the waterfront in downtown Seattle.

  14. I really do want to go to the Space Needle and isn’t the music museum thingy at the foot of the needle? I like the sound of the underground tour as well. Everyone says I HAVE TO see Pike Place Market, but really other than blokes tossing around dead fish, what else is there??

As for eating, I don’t have expensive taste. I have friends who think their trip is incomplete without going to the most expensive hotels, restaurants, stage shows etc. I’m not like that. I’m happy to eat at TGIF, Ruby Tuesday, Friendly’s, McDonalds as long as the food and the restaurant is clean.

And for me, travelling is all about experiencing life with the locals. So if you take me to your local pub, I’ll be happy. Just the same as I’ll be happy to go to Walmart :D

I’ve not heard of Red Robin before. What is it? The fact that it’s on the waterfront makes it sound good! There’s just something about dining in a harbour city by the water :)

  15. ^ Red Robin has yummy hamburgers.

Joders, good to know that you aren’t into fancy restaurants. Me eithers. You’re gonna get local and cheap in L.A. too. :)

I wanna go to Seattle too! If I can work it, you all may be stuck wif me for longer than 2 bloody days. HA.

  16. I luuuuurve hamburgers! (Oh hell, what am I talking about? I just luuuuurve food!) You guys don’t put beetroot on your burgers, do you?

Nothing wrong with local and cheap. I still think hanging with the locals is the best way to experience life.

I want you to go to Seattle too, Ki-Ki! I’ll write a note to your lecturer to explain your absence if you like. I’m sure that’ll swing you a few extra days off :D

  17. Guys, I am off from the 17th of November until the 25th now!!!!!!

  18. OMG! Who did you have to kill or shag to get that??! (I’m kidding, you know that, right? :D Coz if you had to shag any of your superior officers, I reeeeally owe you big time…. )

Joking aside (only for a minute though), that is soooooo bloody exciting! All four of us in LA! The city is never gonna be the same again!

Sorry about my excessive use of exclamation marks, but I’m just soooooo excitable!

  19. I went in to Bi-Polar Hitler and asked. I asked him to take out the original leave chit I had in and replace it with a new one. He gave me some shit (but he was in a good mood, so it was all good) and it was approved right on the spot!

  20. This the hotness!

    God Bless Bi-Polar Hitler.

  21. Yes, God Bless Bi-Polar Hitler. Lucky you got him on a good day :) (or he’s been taking his medication, haha).

  22. Okay, now before I book my flight to LA, what day and time were you planning on leaving LA? I was planning on arriveing in LA on the Thurs at 11:40 AM and leaving at 8 on Sunday, which would put me back in Seattle around noon

  23. Cool! My flight to LA arrives at some unGodly hour in the morning (6am or something like that I think) but by the time I’ve cleared customs and collected my luggage it’ll probably be at least an hour later.

I’m also looking for a morning flight to Seattle. I’ve checked out 7am, 7:30am and 8am which all get me in to Seattle mid morning – noon. I was waiting to see if the cost would come down a little or not.

If you’re leaving on an 8am flight, I’ll see if I can book my flight for the same / similar time.

  24. Okay, cool. I’m looking at Virgin, Alaskan and Southwest for rates right now as I nosh on steak and corn. Yum. At we’re heading back to Seattle on the Sunday, right?

  25. Southwest! That was the airline Anners told me to look at. Brain like a sieve! Ooooh, steak and corn sounds yummy, but isn’t it lgoing on for 3am where you are? And yep, we’re heading back to Seattle on the Sunday (again, brain like a sieve).

I looked at an American Airlines flight that leaves LA at 8:30am and gets in at about 11:30am. The cost was $172 OZ. I dunno if that’s good, bad or indifferent. That’s what I would usually pay for a return flight to Brisbane (which takes half the time).

  26. I’m going with Virgin Air because you get to pick your own seat and they’re cheaper than Southwest. My flight arrives at LAX at 9:35 AM and leaves Sunday at 9:15 AM which will put me back in Seattle at noon.

  27. If you grab Virgin flight 781 leaving LAW at 9:15 and pick seat 25B, we’ll be seatmates!

  28. And if Anners is coming and picks seat 25A, we’ll have the whole row to oursevles

  29. Virgin America? Flight 781? I’ll call my travel agent tomorrow (Monday for me) and see if she can book me a seat on the same flight.

And I just checked my international flight. It arrives at LAX at 6:25am. So there’ll be enough time to go to the hotel, have a shower and get changed and come back to meet you off your flight!

  30. Holllllller.

  31. Yay!!! Plus, Virgin America is on time 90% of the time and cheaper than any other airline even with the 15 dollar baggage fee per bag, up to nine bags!

Fuck, I sound like a commercial.

  32. Okay, I think I’ll be able to make a trip to Oz next year, if you’ll have me?!

  33. Woohoo! Okay, cross your fingers that my travel agent can get me on the same flight. I tried online at the Vrigin site but foreigners don’t appear to be able to book on the US site. Expedia / Best Flights don’t have any Virgin flights listed.

Ha, maybe you’ll get an extra discount for sounding like a commercial.

Oh, and Daners? Are you ephin’ kidding me? Of course I’ll have you. You are more than welcome!

  34. What airline should I look up for a flight to Oz? And what city would I be flying into?

Do you think they’ll give me a discount for having a Virgin mobile phone, too? Cause I totally do. And it’s cheaper than any other comparable plans. 400 anytime minutes, unlimted nights and weekends plus unlimited texts! And no contracts! Booyah.

  35. My preference would be Qantas – the safest and best airline in the entire world :D

But I’m fairly sure American Airlines (or is that US Airlines?? – I think it’s AA) would do it too. I also know that Delta just started flying the Pacific Ocean route (ie Sydney – LA and vice versa). Because of this people are getting return flights to LA for around $900 OZ which is unheard of!

You’d be flying into Sydney. I can come and collect you. We can hang in Sydney for a few days, maybe catch up with Janers if she’s still there. I live about 3 hours from Sydney.

Haha! You’re a walking commercial for Virgin – they should put you on the payroll!

  36. Ooo, a plug for Quantas!!! They need to give a discount, too!

Dude, I’d just be happy with a few free flights for all this Virgin love.

And WTF is up with this Sept. 11th security fee every bloody airline wants to impose? I got to pay you for security theater now? I call BS on the airlines.

  37. OOoo, I see a flight for about 900 USD round trip. I wonder if it’ll stay that way for a bit. At least 10 months or so.

  38. The security fee must be from your end surely? I don’t think I paid any sort of fee to fly to the US from Oz. There’s always fees and taxes for something, it drives me crazy. There was a fee to use my credit card to pay for the flights. One of the other travel agents I was going to book through wanted a fee of nearly $200 for the privilege of them booking the flights for me!

I guess if you booked the flight at 900USD you’d have to pay it off within a certain timeframe? Or you’d have to travel within a particular period?

As long as Delta stays in the mix for providing US to Oz flights then the prices should stay relatively low because all the carriers will be competing for passengers. And how better to ensure passengers than low prices??

  39. Those fees are a crock, I tells ya.

I’m thinking a May-ish timeframe. That’s like fall around there, right? Or maybe March and catch some of the summer

  40. Yep, May is autumn. March is also autumn but it’s still warm for at least half of the month. This year it was warm all the way through March – lots of Indian Summer days.

  41. Oh, and to answer your question about which shoes to wear in November; anything that won’t be harmed by a bit of rain. And something comfortable. There’s loads of walking to be had

  42. My travel agent seems to think she has booked my preferred seat for me on the Virgin flight, but she is calling Virgin America to confirm before I pay.

  43. Ok, quick question for you Bond Girl. When you booked your flight between Seattle and LA what sort of documentation did you get?

My travel agent isn’t able to book my ticket with Virgin America but my nephew (or someone else in the US) is. My concern is even if I give him all my personal details to book the flight for me, who will get my flight confirmation info? Do I get an E-ticket or will it be sent to my nephew (which kind of defeats the purpose).

    I’m very confused.

  44. Just have him put in your email addy instead of his when they ask. They’ll send you an itinerary and confirmation to your email and you can check in a day before online.

  45. If all else fails, I can book it and have it sent to either you or me.

  46. Got it! I’ll get him to give it a go for me and see what happens. Worse case scenario? I have to walk to Seattle :D

  47. Well, if all else fails, I’ll just tuck you into my carry-on. I foresee no problems there

  48. Looks like our hotel is going to be free. Just thought I’d share that with you all. :)

  49. Anners, I don’t know how you managed to make this work, but you’re pretty damn incredible! I’m so excited, I had to check out the hotel again :D

And what the hell is up with the smileys on wordpress? They’ve changed. They look all weird. The normal smiley looks constipated and the wide smile smiley looks insane!

    ;) :P :O

  50. Well, damn! The shocked smiley didn’t work! Hahaha!

  51. OMG, Anners, you are a goddess. How?! Why?! What?!

  52. Hold that thought. It may not be free anymore, but it will cost us a just fraction of the original price. Sorry!!!! My bro gets 12 free nights a year and he just informed moi that he’s going to use a few more than I thought. So maybe a night will be free and the other nights willl be @ $77 tops. Still cool, though, right? :)

  53. This is more than cool! Like I said, I’m so excited I had to check out the hotel again! I can barely believe there’s a little over 4 months to go!

  54. Still awesome!!!

Guys, I just bawled my eyes out watching The Green Mile. Last week I bawled my eyes out while reading The Green Mile. I kinda feel like a dork

  55. Dude, these smileys are weird.

Daners: At keast you’re not watching Wonder Woman… and enjoying it immensely.

  56. The Green Mile was fantastic as a book. And I cried. I won’t watch the movie.

We were only talking about Wonder Woman and the Bionic Woman at work a few days ago, Anners. I remember spinning round and round and round in the backyard when I was a kid thinking I’d turn into Wonder Woman. I only made myself dizzy!

What was the name of the kid who used to yell “Shazam!”? I used to like that show too.

Oh, and I’m toying with the idea of stopping off in San Fran for a few days on the way home. I’m not entirely sure, I’m just trying to fit it into my itinerary. Or as my newphew’s wife once said “maybe I’m trying to shove $10 worth of manure into a $5 bag”.

  57. Haha. I did that too (twirl around and pretend to morph into Wonder Woman), Joders. I should do it again, for old times’ sake.

Ooh! That’d be cool beans if you stopped in San Francisco.

  58. Haha! Have fun, but don’t make yourself sick.

Some friends of mine went to the US for a wedding in May / June and stopped off in San Francisco for a few days. They had such a great time and I saw their photos and it really made me want to go too. I’ve got a few days off work shortly, so I hope to get it all organised then.

  59. Sweetness!

  60. Ha! I watched Wonder Woman (the movie thingy that come out like a year ago or something) and totally enjoyed it because I.am.a.dork. And I’m glad I’m not the only one who spun around hoping to turn into Wonder Woman. And I fashioned wrist bands out of aluminum foil so I could fend off bullets shot by my attackers

  61. San FranciscHo is lovely!

  62. Guess what?? I have my confirmation email from Virgin for the flight to Seattle! I’m all excited!

Re: Wonder Woman, when I was a kid my sister bought me a Wonder Woman show bag from the Newcastle Show (a show is like a fair, with rides and sideshow alley etc). Inside the bag was a Wonder Woman head band, Wonder Woman wrist cuffs and a silver rope (might have been a few other Wonder Womany things but I can’t remember now). I had so much fun with that stuff.

I’d never have thought to make the wrist cuffs out of aluminium foil – that’s brilliant!

  63. OMG that is awesome!!!! I am so happy!

  64. I figure this flight to Seattle will be good practice for when we’re travelling in Europe together!

  65. Yay!!! This is going to be so fantastic.

  66. I dunno about you, but I can’t wait. I’m at work right now (Monday morning) and all I want to do is go home and organise the rest of my vacation.

And I seriously need to get out the thesaurus to find another word that means excited! I’ve said I’m excited so many times, it’s starting to get old :D

  67. Dude, I’m excited, nervous, happy, enthralled, eager, enthusiastic, zippy,….um….zestful…um, I can’t think of anymore.

It’s thundering and lightening out and you have no idea how happy I am to see and hear it. Thunderstorms are a rarity here in Western Washington. I can count on one hand how many times I’m seen a thunderstorm since leaving Ohio.

Ugh, Monday morning. I just got home from hanging out with a friend this weekend. I posted about it. I got to be around lots of horses and had a blast.

  68. Joders! I got some fliers for some attractions in Seattle while I was at the Pt. Defiance Zoo. Okay, the underground tour is from 11-5 every day and costs $15USD to get in. There’s also a guided tour of Seattle’s Infamous Old Red-Light District at 8 PM. That’s $21USD with a cocktail included. I had no idea there was a great fire of 1889 and the city rebuilt itself over itself afterward. Huh.

There’s also the Ye Olde Curiosity Shop on Pier 54 that’s free. It consists of two museums and is supposed to be awesome.

There’s the Museum of Flight right by the airport is ye be interested. It’s open from 10-5 and costs $14USD.

I have all these fliers for you to look at when I pick you up from the airport. Or, I can email you the basics.

I can’t believe November is almost here!

  69. Bugger, I’m in moderation.

I’m going to wander over to see what’s in the fridge.

  70. Why on earth did you end up in moderation? WordPress must have PMS.

I definitely want to do the underground tour. And the red light tour with the cocktail sounds brilliant. I love museums. I can amuse myself for hours in there.

What do you mean, pick me up from the airport? Aren’t we catching the same flight from LA to Seattle?

    4 months to go!

  71. Oh, dur, I forgot about that. We ARE on the same flight! W00t!!!

I think it’s because I used my comcast email. I was trying to change my avie, but it didn’t work. I’m sick of Jem.

  72. You mad bugger! Stick the fliers in your luggage and I can check them out on the flight.

  73. Ok!!

    I’m so very excited!

  74. Me too! It’s going to be hard to concentrate on anything but this holiday over the next few months. Good thing I don’t have to think too hard at work.

  75. I’m sitting here watching that Quantum Leap epi where he leaps into Marilyn Monroe’s bodyguard! Or, at least I’m trying to. My stupid computer doesn’t like it for some reason and keep fucking up. And if the cable guy hadn’t just left without setting up my DVD player after installing cable last month, I’d watch it on the TV. But too many wires and not enough patience=the DVD is just going to sit there.. I guess I’ll have to trudge upstairs to my bedroom TV. At least there’s air conditioning up there. And I don’t have to listen to the stupid high school band practice.

Why am I not up there already?!

  76. Yeah, why are you not up there already?

I’m hopeless with technology. I figure if I was meant to be able to hook up the TV to the DVD recorder and tune the channels in by myself, then there’d be no such person as the TV technician dude. Besides, techno retards like me keep TV technician dudes in a job.

  77. Jopders! And Anners and Afers if they come. I just found out the filmed Officer and a Gentleman here and you can visit the fort where it was filmed. So, if you want, we can do Seattle one day and that the next. Or Seattle one day and a half and that the next half. It’s up to you. I went last week.

  78. Bugger. I forgot I’d go into moderation!

  79. An Officer and a Gentleman? The one with Richard Gere, right? I am sooooo there! You obviously had a good time? Sounds like you did a heap of things and went lots of places over the last couple of weeks.

Okay, that’s as much enthusiasm as I can muster right now. I’m having a shitful time at work this week and I’m going to bed now to cry myself to sleep.

  80. Lurved that movie.

  81. Correction. Lurved the Richard Gere scenes. Ha.

  82. Want I come down there and cut.a.muthphucka?

I’m sorry you’re having a rough time, Joders :( I do hope it gets better.

It’s an old fort and you can tour it and see all the old quarters and some of the places Officer was filmed. Plus you can tour an old officers house and see how it was at the turn of the century. Well, last century, that is.

  83. Joders, I haaaaate it when you feel sad. Feel better right this minute! :(

  84. Tis okay girls. I’m feeling much better now. Thank you :)

So it used to be a working fort? Not just a movie set? (Even if it was a movie set with Richard Gere!) I’m fascinated to see this sort of stuff – I love it, I love immersing myself in the past and experiencing life the way it used to be. It seems an awful shame to forget about it.

  85. Yup, it used to be a fort. It was used mainly to protect the Pacific Northwest during WWI I think. It still has many of its original buildings. I get totally psyched when it comes to this sort of history, too. That’s what I miss about living in Ohio. Historical landmarks are so much closer and that part of the country is so much older than the west, which makes for awesome times. I do miss not ever hitting Gettysburg, though. I will admit something quite dorkish here. I am a HUGE Civil War and WWII buff. WWII mainly because my grandpa fought in it. And the Civil War has always fascinated me.

There’s this dude who starts out the tour of the officer’s house replica and I got him to okay my picture taking, with no flash, of course. He was a retired Navy dude (like 99% of the peeps in Western Washington) and I buttered him up some. I’ll send you the pics, tf you’d like. I’ll probably post them on my Facebook next week. I might be able to con him into it again if we go.

    I’m glad all is well!

  86. It only just struck me when I was reading your comment that Newcastle has a fort too, called Fort Scratchley and it was used to protect the Port of Newcastle from the Japanese during WWII. I think the cannon still works too.

Being a Civil War and WWII buff isn’t dorkish. Not to me anyways.

The photos sound cool! If you post em on your Facebook, I can see them there; it’ll save you from sending them to me as well!

Maybe I can convince the tour guide bloke to let us take photos with my Oz accent. All the Americans love an Australian, right??

  87. Joders, when you fly out of SF, are you going to have HELL OF bags with you? I’m still trying to find a proper place for you.

Oh, and I think you’re all set to check in on Thursday morning in LA. I put in an early check-in request and I added your name to the reservation.

    Is Lindsers coming?

  88. Lindsers is definitley coming – but she’ll be medicated – more fun for us!

Technically I’m not flying out of SF. I’m flying from SF to LA where I’ll check in for my international flight home. I’m thinking I’ll have my one big suitcase, my carry on (which is also on wheels) and maybe one other bag.

Do any hotels have laundry facilities these days? I think I’ll want to do some laundry before I fly home – long story.

Thanks for organising check in for me – you’re a treasure!

    10 days and counting!!!

  89. I’ve got a washer/dryer you can use! Course, you have lots of time between then and until you fly back, but just letting you know the offer’s there

  90. Depending on how much laundry I’ve got by the time I get to your place, I might take you up on your offer.

The problem I have is at the other end of my trip. I’m staying with my nephew, his wife and their daughter for 2 weeks. His wife is a smoker and when I leave their place I reek of it. I want to do some laundry in SF so I’ve got fresh, non smoke smelling clothes for my SF sight seeing and the flight home.

Last time I got home from the US, I opened my bag in the garage and carried stuff inside because the stench of cigarette smoke was overbearing.

  91. ^ Supa cool @ Lindsers joining us.

OH, and I sent y’all an email about the hotel situation.

  92. Oh, and we’re going to visit the Getty Villa on Saturday! (It’s the one on the right)

    http://www.getty.edu/visit/

TTYL, have a paper to write.. :)
